Brattleboro- Irene C. Alexa, 68, of Bonnyvale Road died unexpectedly Sunday, January 1, 2012 at her home. Irene was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on February 14, 1943 the daughter of Charles and Ruth (Petersen) Christensen. With her family she came to the United States at age 14 ands was raised and educated in Stamford, Connecticut. She had been a resident of Brattleboro for the past 42 years. She was a graduate of Wright Technical School in Stamford, Class of 1962 and went on to graduate from Keene State College earning her Master's degree in Education. At the time of her passing she served as activities coordinator of the Brattleboro Senior Center employed by the town of Brattleboro for the past 16 years. Previously Irene taught fifth grade in Chesterfield, New Hampshire school system. Steadfast in her walk of faith she was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was very active with church activities. She loved nature and wildlife and held membership in the National Audubon Society. Of her other pastimes and interests, she enjoyed knitting, gardening, travel, power walking and was an avid reader. On November 24, 1964 in Stamford she was married to James Alexa who predeceased her in October of 1990. Survivors include her two sons, Mark Alexa of Fitchburg, Wisconsin and Dean Alexa of Virginia Beach, Virginia, one sister, Marianne Michelsen of Peru, Vermont and five grandchildren, Deanna, Dana, Kirsten, Cameron and Jimmy Alexa. Additionally she leaves two nieces, Jennifer Thornton and Tanja Albright, and a nephew, Charles Michelsen. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at Centre Congregational Church with Rev. Peggy Yingst, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. A reception in her honor will follow the services to be held at the Brattleboro Senior Center. She will be laid to rest next to her mother in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions in Irene's name may be made to, The Brattleboro Senior Center, 207 Main Street, Brattleboro, Vermont 05301, or to, Trinity Lutheran Church, 161 Western Avenue, Brattleboro 05301.
