Irene M. VandeWalle, 88, of Galesburg, died Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Laurels of Galesburg. She was born September 18, 1922 in Kalamazoo to Harry and Blanche Mae (O'Dell) Wertenberg. Irene was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo and enjoyed crocheting, doing crossword and word search puzzles. She also enjoyed fishing, gardening and being with family and friends. She is especially remembered for her famous fried chicken. She married Gabriel VandeWalle in 1952, he survives. Also surviving are daughter, Joanne (Paul) Gregory of Gull Lake; son, Darel (Eileen) VanVleet of Quincy; grandchildren, Paul D. Gregory, Juliann Gregory-Donabedian, Jennifer Gregory-Chadwick and Kevin VanVleet; great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Zachary and Alexandria Donabedian, Alaina Gregory, Isabella Gregory-Chadwick, Paul S. Gregory III and Blake Gregory-Chadwick; sister, Mary (Elmer) Roberts of Alton, Illinois and brother, Harold Wertenberg of San Francisco. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John C. Oorbeck. Family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Shaw Funeral Home. Funeral services, 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 15, 2011 at the funeral home. Interment, Kendall Cemetery, Pine Grove Township, Michigan. Memorials may be made to the COPD Foundation, 2937 SW 27th Ave, Ste. 302, Miami, FL 33133.
