Niskayuna-Jack G. Coates 90, of Niskayuna, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family.

Jack was born in Fleurus, Belgium, son of the late Christopher O.and Germaine Bille Coates. He lived in St. Helens, England where he attended Liverpool Wireless College and was Chief Radio Officer in the British Merchant Marines from 1939 to 1946. Jack came over to the United States in 1948 where he met and married Lou Carolyn King, January 31, 1948. He started work with the New YorkTelephone Co. on March 8, 1948 and retired in 1986.
Jack worked at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid in 1980 on the microwave system communications. He was a Ham Radio Operator and a member of MARS, SARA (Schenectady Amateur Radio Association) and IEEE.

Jack is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lou Carolyn Coates; son Christopher (Jo Ann) Coates of Dickinson, ND, daughter Elizabeth (Dennis) Dalpe of Niskayuna, NY; grandchildren, Kathleen (Jim) Alcombright of Clifton Park, NY , Gregory Dalpe of Niskayuna, NY, Captain Cortney (Brandon) Zuercher of Lynn Haven, FL Trevor Coates of Dickinson, ND; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Jeannine Lloyd.

A private family service was held at home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Ellis Hospital, specifically Dr. Chowdhrey, Dr. Busino and the A-6 nurses, Sue, Theresa and Carolyn.
