Former Clay County Sheriff Jack J. Corum, Jr., 77, Liberty, Missouri died January 6, 2012 at Liberty Hospital. Jack was born December 24, 1934 to Jack and Lena (Klamm) Corum. His Corum ancestors originally settled in Clay County in 1825. Jack was a lifelong Liberty resident serving his country in the United States Army. Mr. Corum's career in law enforcement began in 1956 as a Liberty Police Officer. He was a North Kansas City Police Officer, Clay County Deputy Sheriff, Special Investigator for the Clay County Prosecutor, and was elected Clay County Sheriff in 1976. Sheriff Corum served four terms, retiring in 1993. The Sheriff was recognized for outstanding service in several areas including his efforts in the cofounding of the Clay County Investigative Squad and the transition to the new Clay County Detention Center. Compatriot Jack Corum was a member of the William C. Corum Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution.
Jack married Mary Louise Moffet of Kansas City, Missouri on September 6, 1958 in Kansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Amy Marie Corum, brothers William, Kenneth, James and John Corum and sisters, Joan Wilson and Shirley Taylor. He is survived by his wife Mary, children John Corum and wife Aree of Greenville, NC; Theresa DeWitt and husband Mark of Olathe, KS; Laurie Saxon and husband Carl of Allen, TX and Kyle Corum of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Travis, Ashley, Heather, Matthew and Parker; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He respectfully leaves his loyal law enforcement community.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 3106 Flora Avenue, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, January 9 with the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home. Burial at Fairview Cemetery, Liberty, MO. The family requests donations in Jack's memory to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church or School.
