Mr. Jack Lewis Awtrey, age 85 of the Ola Community of McDonough, Georgia passed away December 2, 2011. Jack was born in Atlanta to the late William Luther and Susie Lawson Awtrey and was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. He served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. Jack started working at the Exposition Cotton Mill at age 16 where he met the love of his life, his future wife Agnes. He then went on to work for Lockheed for five years and retired from the U. S. Postal Service after 31 years of service. Jack was an avid golfer, having started playing at age nine, winning many tournaments at the Bobby Jones Golf Course where many of his trophies are still on display. Pop, as he was known by his family, coached and umpired Little League and was very active in his grandchildren's and great grandchildren's lives whether attending games or school events and enjoyed telling jokes and was a member of Sharon Baptist Church. Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Agnes Cash Awtrey; children, Janice (Roy) Hodgkin of McDonough, Jack L. (Diane) Awtrey, Jr. of LaGrange, Edith (Gus) McLary of Woodstock; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; three sisters and one brother and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 5, 2011 at 1:00 PM from the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home. Rev. Gary Lewis will officiate. Interment will follow at Crestlawn Memorial Park.
