Frankel, Dr. Jack William, 86, of Treasure Island, Fl, found eternal peace, Friday, January 13, 2012. He was born and raised in New York, NY, and relocated to Treasure Island from Basking Ridge, NJ in 1968. He was a WWII Army Veteran serving from 1942-1946. He received his baccalaureate degree in biology from Brown University and his doctoral degree in microbiology from Rutgers University.
Dr. Frankel was a preeminent figure in public health and medical research for the past 40 years. He is recognized by his peers throughout the world as a leading authority in medical virology, having published over 150 scientific reports and authored chapters on medical virology in six text books. He has held positions of responsibility in the Inter-American Society for Chemotherapy such as, founder, director and past president. He has worked side-by-side with several of the most brilliant minds in modern day medical research including Dr. John F. Enders, winner of the Nobel Prize in medicine and Physiology and Dr. Albert Sabin and Dr. Jonas Salk, pioneers in the development of vaccines against polioviruses.
He was an accomplished pianist and writer of beautiful music even though he cannot read a single musical note.
In stark contrast, at home this dedicated and hard driving scientist is recognized as a loving husband to his surviving wife Florence of 63 years, a kind and understanding father to their three children Jill Eve (Samuel) Chapman, Dr. Jon-Paul (Deborah) Frankel and Captain Jeff (Doris) Frankel, as "Pop" to his six grandchildren and one deceased grandchild, and brother to Babette Reuben. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and loving friends all over the world.
