Brattleboro – James A. Simson died at his home in accordance with his wishes on November 3, 2011. He was attended by his sons, James M. Simson of Brattleboro and David F. Simson of Brooklyn, NY. The cause of death was complications from a broken hip, which he suffered in a fall from an electric scooter in August of this year. In addition to his sons, he is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Macalister of Hilton Head, SC and Martha Susan Cocks of Dover, MA; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Jim was born and raised in Tonawanda, NY and began his college education at the University of Michigan in 1939. He ultimately graduated from Hofstra College which he attended under the GI Bill. He was widowed from his wife of sixty seven years, Dorothy Berge Simson who died last year. He was a CPA who pursued a career in public accounting in Freeport, NY with his father-in-law, Fred C. Berge, before relocating to the Brattleboro area forty years ago. He and his late wife, Dorothy, built and restored several homes in the Brattleboro area. James designed the homes and performed much of the construction. For many years he heated his homes with wood which he cut and split himself. Jim was a World War II veteran who flew a B17G in the Eighth Air Force from England. He flew thirty five missions over Germany and German-occupied Europe. He was an avid bridge player who played at the Brattleboro Senior Center in the last year of his life. Funeral arrangements are private.
