James Allen Cunningham passed away on January 28, 2012 in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Born in Janesville, Wisconsin on August 2, 1925, he was the fifth child of Archie and Esther (Peterson) Cunningham. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic School and graduated from Janesville High School in 1943. For the past several years, he resided in Longwood, Florida.
Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force at 17 during WW II. He was stationed in China and served as corporal in the 330th squadron, 513th troop carrier group. After the War he attended Georgetown University, Washington D.C. and graduated from Dunwiddie Institute, Minneapolis. He married Mary E. Owen on March 9, 1950. He was employed for many years at Cunningham's Bakery, a family business. He also worked at Chambers and Owen of Janesville and in sales for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company.
Jim was an avid golfer and scratch player. He was a champion in amateur bridge play. He enjoyed dancing, long drives in the country, discussing politics and the Green Bay Packers. He was a Christian and for many years regularly attended the Man in the Mirror bible study in Winter Park, Florida.
Jim is survived by three sons and one daughter: James Owen (Joyce) Cunningham of Winter Park, FL; Alexander Paul Cunningham of Janesville, WI; Maggie Cunningham (Robert) Drane of Altamonte Springs, FL and William Allen (Cydney) Cunningham of Santa Rosa Beach, FL. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Vetta of Arlington Heights, IL and eight grandchildren: Emily Cunningham (Mark) Hammond, James A. (Shawna) Cunningham, Kaleigh Cunningham, Benjamin Drane, Kate Drane, Mary Claire Cunningham, Ellie Cunningham, and William A. Cunningham, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Robert and David, and four sisters: Corrine, Margaret, Jean Ann, and Esther (Dee).
Visitation will be held in the Ivanhoe Chapel of Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home located at 301 Northeast Ivanhoe Boulevard Orlando, Florida 32804 from 5:00 -8:00 PM on February 3, 2012. A private burial service will be held on February 11, 2012 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Janesville, Wisconsin. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Comforter, Altamonte Springs, FL.
