JAMES DEAN BEATTY (JIM) passed away October 14th at the age of 81 at his home in Greeley. The cause of death was Alzheimer Disease. Jim was born in LaJunta, Colorado on September 3, 1929 to Jason Leroy Beatty and Clara Mabel (Kenner) Beatty. Jim was the oldest of three boys. (Jim, David and Alan) He spent most of his young life in Colorado and graduated from Springfield, Colorado High School in 1947. Jim received his B.A.Degree in Business from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado in 1951. He enlisted in the Air Force, attended OCS and received his commission as 1st Lt. After completing his service, he enrolled in CU where he received his LLB Degree in 1956. Jim arrived in Fort Collins July 1, 1956 to work as a Trust Officer for Poudre Valley Bank. His law career began January 1, 1960 in Fort Collins when he joined the Fischer & Beatty Law Firm and continued in 1975 when he started his solo practice, James D. Beatty, PC; retiring in 1995. During Jim's years in Fort Collins he served his local community in many ways. Rotary President, Elder and General Legal Counsel for the Presbytery of Boulder, United Way, Red Cross Disaster Committee, Larimer and Colorado Heart Associations, Founding Director of Youth Baseball and many others. From 1980 to 1988 Jim served as Senator in the Colorado State Senate. He was Chairman or Vice-Chairman of many committees, Local Government, Finance Committee, Agriculture Committee, Judiciary Committee, Business Affairs & Labor Committee, Legal Services Committee, Appropriations Committee and the Chairman of the Joint Budget Committee. Jim was a happy, positive, intelligent and kind man who loved life and never knew a stranger. He loved to sing in the shower (Row Row Row, 5'2 Eyes of Blue and SMILE were his favorites.) He loved to dance at the Safari, drive fast cars, ski in the Colorado Mountains, play bridge, play tennis and solve problems. Early in life Jim used to say that he wanted a marching band at his memorial. Later that changed, he wanted his memorial to bless our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, his family and his friends. Jim married Peggy Callihan July 13, 1952. Jim and Peggy had a son Bruce D. Beatty of Tucson, Arizona and a daughter Lila J. Gronau of Mesquite, Texas. Jim married Mary Regan February 14, 1978 and was step-father to Robert D. Regan and Mike L. Regan of Greeley, Colorado. He is survived by Mary, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and brother, Alan Beatty. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and a brother David Leroy Beatty. The Memorial Service will be November 12 at 10AM at First Presbyterian Church, 531 S. College Ave, Fort Collins with a reception following. Internment at 2:30PM at Fort Logan Cemetery in Denver.
