James E. Boothby Jr. “Jim”, 80, peacefully passed away on August 14, 2011 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. Jim was born in Chicago, Illinois and resided in St. Joseph Michigan for over 70 years. He was a resident of Tarpon Springs, Florida where he and his wife, Joan B. (Greenman) Boothby have resided for more than 7 years. Jim and Joan celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on August 4th, 2011.
Jim started his career in Chicago, Illinois in Advertising and later owned a Travel Agency, “Boothby Vacation Travel, Inc.”, from which he retired in 1981. Jim was a graduate of Benton Harbor High School and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Kalamazoo College.
Having many ties to the community, Jim was a member of St. Joseph River Yacht Club for more than 35 years where he enjoyed socializing with friends & sailboat racing. Jim was also a member of the Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Joan B. (Greenman) Boothby of Tarpon Springs, Florida, his daughter, Johanna K. (Boothby) Curtiss of Taylors, South Carolina, his son-in-law, Alan S. Curtiss of Taylors, South Carolina, one grandson, Matthew A. Curtiss, also of Taylors, South Carolina, 2 Nephews; Harry & James, 2 Nieces; Sarah & Deborah and several other cousins. He was preceded in death by his son, James E. Boothby III, his parents, James & Victoria Boothby Sr. and his sister, Victoria Ann (Boothby) Ross.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 914 Lane Dr., St. Joseph, Michigan at 10:00am on Thursday August 25, 2011. Following, there will be a processional to Jim’s final resting place, Riverview Cemetery. A luncheon for family and close friends will follow at the St. Joseph River Yacht Club. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel.
