After a two year battle with Glioblastoma (brain cancer) James Chmelar, 55, passed away at home on August 29, 2013. James was known to most as Jim; a kind, loving and compassionate man. Jim was preceded in death by his father Leopold Chmelar, his mother JoAnn (Barr) Chmelar and his brother Bob Chmelar. He is survived by his deeply beloved wife - Lisa Chmelar, his siblings – Vicki Wenner, Joe (Skeeter) Chmelar and Mike Chmelar, his son - Leo Chmelar McDowell, his step daughters - Sarah Teale and Katie Ryan, and four adoring grandchildren - Louis, Nole, Taylor and Brodie. Jim was well known in his hometown of Emporium, Pennsylvania in his role as a volunteer fireman/EMT and high school football player.
Jim spent the majority of his career as a Quality Engineer, and in the oil industry. His work took him to far flung reaches of the globe including China, Russia and Romania. In more recent years, after Jim's relocation to Texas, he has been most well known as a doting grandfather and the "best tickler in the West". Jim worshiped at Living Water Lutheran where he has an even larger "family" who has shared love and support over the past several years. Jim's greatest joy in life was loving and taking care of his family, listening to music and playing the guitar, and giving the best bear hugs. He will be deeply missed. The family would like to offer their greatest thanks to the staff at Texas Oncology, Hospice Austin, MD Anderson Cancer Research team and Seton Williamson Hospital Northeast.
To honor Jim, a Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, September 6th, 2013 from 6-8pm at Veteran's Memorial Park Pavilion, 2525 West New Hope Drive, Cedar Park Texas 78613.
According to what we believe would be Jim's wish the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations are made to his son Leo Chmelar-McDowell's educational fund. Donations can be made to the Jim Chmelar Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo Bank-MAC T7009-010, 920 N. Lakeline Blvd, Cedar Park Texas 78613, dropped off at the Celebration of Life or send directly to Lisa Chmelar.
