COLUMBIA - James Elliott Heath McCoy, 57, died Sunday, December 11, 2011. Born September 11, 1954 in Greensboro, N.C., he was the son of the late Russell Austin Jr. and Suzanne McBee Heath McCoy. He was raised in Spartanburg and attended Spartanburg City schools, USC and Wofford College. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario and two Master's degrees in Social Work and Education from the University of S.C. He was a teacher in Charleston County schools and worked with youth in a variety of roles. He returned to Columbia in 2000 and resided here until his death.
He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Martha McCoy and Stanley T. Case of Spartanburg; twin brother and sister-in-law, Russell A. McCoy, III and Dorothy Dean Cecil of Columbia; nieces and nephews, Stephen Nathaniel Case of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., Sarah Brooks Case of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Benjamin Heath Case of Spartanburg, Abigail Hundley McCoy of New York, N.Y., and Russell Austin McCoy, IV of Columbia.
Jim loved and enjoyed his family and many friends. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
A private family service will be held. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
