James F. Erspamer, 86, of Marquette, passed away Friday evening, June 17, 2011at Marquette General Hospital surrounded by his family. Jim was born on October 10, 1924 in Norway, Michigan, a son of Florenz and Rosalie (Gendron) Erspamer. His high school education was briefly interrupted while he proudly served his country with the U.S. Marines during World War II. When Jim returned from the service he finished High School and graduated from Ferris State University as a pharmacist. Jim was one of the previous owners along with his brother, Jack of Marquette Pharmacy from 1955 through 1976. He was later employed at the Marquette Branch Prison as a pharmacist until his retirement in 1986. Jim served on and was a past president of the Michigan State Board of Pharmacy. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, and was an avid Detroit Red Wing and Green Bay Packer fan. He attended all of his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. Jim was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church where he served as an altar server at funerals for almost two decades. He was also a member of Msgr. Nolan B. McKevitt Council #689 Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Lois M. Ropele whom he married on June 5, 1948 at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Vulcan, Michigan; three children, Beth (Don) St.Onge, Dan (Mary) Erspamer and Tom (Cathy) Erspamer, all of Marquette; six grandchildren, Amy and Matt St.Onge, Bobby, Lynne, Katie and Bryan Erspamer; also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Marie Lotz and Betty LePage; also three brothers, Curtis, Robert and John Erspamer. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Larry VanDamme officiating, Rev. Ben Hasse will con-celebrate. Deacon Dennis Maki will assist. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Jim's grandchildren will act as his pallbearers. Honorary bearers will be Dan Rice, Tony DePetro, Chuck Gunning, Joe Sullivan, Elmer Sarasin, Neil Greenleaf and Herb Anderson. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider the St. Michael Catholic Church Memorial Fund, 401 W. Kaye Ave., Marquette, MI 49855 in Mr. Erspamer's memory.
