GLOUCESTER – Commercial fisherman, James H., Sullivan, Jr., 32, died suddenly on Friday, July 3, 2009. James, known by friends as Sully, was an experienced fisherman who logged many hours for his captain’s license. He was an Able Bodied Seaman with the Merchant Marines and a marine mechanic. He was honorably discharged from the U.S.M.C. as a Lance Corporal in 1997. He was a 1995 graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Westfield, Mass. where he was a star athlete in baseball and soccer. He attended Westfield State College and completed his marine mechanic education at the Marine Mechanic Institute in Florida in 1999.
Jim was a commercial fisherman for ten years out of Gloucester sailing most of those years on the Explorer II with friend and mentor Captain Bob Andersen, now deceased.
Jim also worked on a commercial fishing vessel out of Ketchikan, Alaska going as far north as the Bering Straits where he was known as “The Man from Gloucester.” He transported private sailing vessels from the Northeast to Florida, Tortolla, Bermuda and Iceland.
Jim’s love of the sea and the fishing industry made him an advocate for the Gloucester fishing industry and was disheartened by what he called its “heartbreaking” struggles to continue. He was deeply distressed over the impact of big government on the individual one-man fishing fleets.
His favorite fishing areas included the Grand Banks and George’s Banks in the North Atlantic. He was intimately acquainted with the sea and knew it in calm and storm.
Jim also enjoyed music composition, writing lyrics and short stories.
He leaves his parents, James H. and Lucia M. Sullivan of Blandford, Mass. his sister and best friend Kathleen Sullivan of Westfield, Mass. special friends Stacey Phillips of Salem, Mass., his faithful shipboard companion, Harley and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who love him.
There will be a Mass celebrating his life on Saturday, July 11 at Our Lady of the Rosary Roman Catholic Church at 5 Main Street in Russell, Mass. at 10 a.m.
Family and friends will gather at The Blandford Club on North Street in Blandford immediately following the service to continue the celebration of Jim’s life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gloucester Fisherman’s Wives Association at 11-15 Parker Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.
