James J. Foley, Sr., age 86, of Ocean City, NJ died Sunady August 16, 2009 at Shore Memorial Hospital, Somers Point, NJ. Born the third of 14 children on November 27, 1922 in Bryn Mawr, Pa. to Catherine (nee O'Donnell) and John J. Foley. Jim grew up in Bryn Mawr and Havertown, Pa., graduating from Haverford High School. Jim served in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean War. During WW II he served aboard the USS Thomason DE-203 and aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA-42 during the Korean War. He retired from Red Arrow/SEPTA in 1985 after 41 years. Jim started as a lineman, was a Union Official and then moved into management where he was a manager of Labor Relations. sitting on many arbitration hearings. In September, 1947 Jim married Mary A. Walsh of Germantown. In 1957 they moved to Highland Park, Upper Darby where they raised their family. Jim coached neighborhood baseball for many years. He was an active parishioner of St. Laurence for many years where he was a Lector and a member of the Choir. After his retirement in 1985 they moved to Ocean City, New Jersey. Jim's wife Mary passed away in 1992 after 45 years of marriage. An avid golfer, Jim was past president of the Ocean City Seniors League. At the age of 84 he was the Elite Champion of the Ocean City Seniors League. He is the father of Barbara Laurelli (Carmen), James J. Foley, Jr (Anne), Thomas J. Foley (Kathleen) and the late Patrick Foley. He has 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and his siblings; Mary Jean Powers, Thomas Foley, Donald Foley, Leo Foley, Dede Dennin, Joan Dennin, Katie Dennin, Betsy Henry, Ned Foley and the late John J. Foley, Jr, Loretta Steven, Ann Morgan and Hugh Foley. Family and friends may call 7:00 to 9:00 PM Thursday, August 20 and Friday 8:30 to 9:30 AM. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Friday August 21 in St. Denis Church, Havertown. Interment will follow in St. Denis Cemetery. in lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, attn: Fr. Peter, 2249 Shore Rd. P.O.
