James L. Poole

James Leonard Poole, 62, peacefully passed on February 6, 2009, at Wesley Acres Hospice surrounded by his loving family.

A visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, February 9, 2009, at Faith Lutheran Church, 10395 University Ave, Clive, followed by a Memorial Service at 7 p.m. A private burial at Leon Cemetery will be held on February 10, 2009.

Jim was born in Leon, Iowa, on November 19, 1946, the beloved son of Ellsworth (Dick) and Betty Poole. He earned both a Bachelors and Masters Degree from Northwest Missouri State University and did additional graduate work at Iowa State University and Drake University. He married Vicky Parson, his high school sweetheart, and began a lifetime career devoted to education. He was a math teacher and a school administrator for 31 years, dedicating his life to the education of students. He retired in 2001 due to complications of diabetes.

Jim was a three sport athlete in school who also enjoyed other outdoor activities. He was an avid hunter and f isherman, spending endless hours with his dad, son and special fisherman friends. For many years, Jim, Vicky, Jodi, and Jamie spent a hot July week on RAGBRAI. Next came the Harleys.

Jim's life is celebrated by his mother Betty, his wife Vicky, and his children, Jodi and husband, Matt Bybee, of Ankeny and James and wife, Meredith, of Urbandale. The life of ""Papa Jim"" is also celebrated by his grandchildren, Ryan, Dylan, and Blake Bybee, and Sam and Kate Poole. Memorials may be directed to Dollars for Scholars at Valley High School.

Many thanks for the kindness shared by those who cared for Jim, including the West Des Moines and Clive EMT services, the staff at DaVita West, and the staff and hospice care providers at his Wesley Acres home.
