STOVALL - James Newton Stovall, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2011 following a three-month illness. He was born in Glade Spring, VA, to Jim Stovall Sr., Jo Stovall, who were farmers. He left school at a young age during the Great Depression to work on the family farm. Jim devoted his life to serving God, country and family. He was drafted into the Navy in the final days of World War II and served in the occupation of Japan, including several occasions as a driver for the staff of General Douglas MacArthur. He was also drafted into the United States Army in Korea, serving in a mortar unit and seeing combat in engagements that included the infamous battles of Pork Chop Hill and actions near the Chosin Reservoir, as well as other engagements and was highly decorated. Following Korea, he also served in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Kirtland Air Force base in Albuquerque. Following his military service, he worked for the Department of Energy in Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennie, who suffered from cerebral palsy and to whom he was tirelessly devoted for her 32 years, and her twin sister, Jannie, who died at birth. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Peggie Stovall of Albuquerque, and by siblings that include Mary Shepard, Helen Lane, Ruby Clark, Billy Stovall, Howard Stovall, and Susie Martin; and multiple nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Friends may visit French - Wyoming Chapel Tuesday, December 20, 2011 from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. Services will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 2:00 p.m., also at French - Wyoming Chapel. Interment with military honors will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
