Brownell, Colonel James R. Jr. 87, passed away on November 27,2011 at Brookside Hospice House in Palm Harbor, Florida.
He leaves his wife of sixty-six years, Mary, six children (Mary of Fairfax, Virginia, Margaret (Rick) of New Port Richey, Florida, Joan (Chuck) of Boulder City, Nevada, Eileen (Bob) of Ashburn, Virginia, Jim of Del Mar, California, and Jack of Rockville, Maryland), five grandchildren (Daniel Sobota (Janel), John Hawkins (Daryl), Mark Sobota (Sara), Breanna Perry (Jason) and Deborah Sobota (Billy)) and 2 great-grandchildren (Lynn Sobota and Jack Hawkins). He is survived by his two sisters, Norma Fuller (Jim) of Omaha, Nebraska and Frances Brownell of Vancouver, Canada.
Jim was a graduate of West Point and served his country as an Army engineer. His Army career included tours in Germany, Korea and Vietnam.
After his military career, he received a doctorate in international affairs from George Washington University.
We will always remember Jim's incredible mind, amazing work ethic and total dedication to his family, friends and country.
"My philosophy . . .is not to dwell on the past and reminisce. It is rather to look to the future and the new and enjoyable challenges that I perceive stretching on into the foreseeable future. Mary labels me an incurable optimist, and I guess she's right."
Jim Brownell, USMA 1945, Fifty Yearbook
