Gloucester: James W. Horsley passed away Friday morning, May 25, 2012, at age 92. James served in the 1096th Engineer Service Detachment with the United States Army during World War II. His posts included Okinawa, Luzon and the Philippines. After his tour of duty, he returned to his job at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, VA, where he worked from 1940-1972. A lifelong resident of Gloucester County, James was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Chapter No. 886. His hobbies included watch, radio and television repair. He also enjoyed sewing and bird-watching with his beloved wife, Beatrice. James took great joy in watching his sons and granddaughters grow up, and he loved playing ball with his great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha C. Horsley; father, Calvin B. Horsley; stepmother, Helen B. Horsley; brothers, Kenneth, Chalmers, Edward and Howard Horsley; sister Stella West; and daughter-in-law, Mary Lee Horsley.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Beatrice Jenkins Horsley. Additionally, James is survived by son, J. Wayne Horsley and wife Cynthia; son, Richard M. Horsley; granddaughters, Janet H. Wyndham and husband, Ross and Jennifer H. Worrell and husband, Tim; four great-grandchildren, Kindred, Peyton, Travis and Ashley Worrell; sisters, Hildred Marrs, Irene H. Carr and Violet H. Schaeffer; brother, Nelson Horsley and wife, Isabel; sister-in-law, Dorothy P. Horsley; numerous nieces and nephews; and nurse, Carol Gunn.
Funeral services officiated by Reverend Thad Decker and Pastor Steve Sales will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment with military honors will follow in Rosewell Memorial Garden.
