James W. Runck, 92, died Tuesday, September 25, 2007 in Bethany Homes, Fargo, ND. He was a Casselton resident for the past 35 years.

James W. Runck was born March 26, 1915 in Maple River Township, on a farm near Lynchburg, North Dakota. He was educated at Rural School District 114 for eight years, graduated from Casselton High School and attended NDAC, Fargo, where he was enrolled in a two year course in Animal Husbandry.

In 1936, he became the third generation owner of the family farm, which was established in 1881. The present operation consists of 4700 acres of diversified faming: small grains, sunflowers, corn, soybeans, feedlots and stock cow herds.

James married Prudence Sprecher in 1938 at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Casselton, ND.

His organizational involvement includes: Director and Vice President of the Midwest Montadale Sheep Breeders Association; past President and Director of the North Dakota Cattle Feeders Association; 4-H Leader; Chairman of Cass County 4-H Achievement Days, 1957-1973; Cass County Representative and Director of the State 4-H Foundation; President and Vice President of the Cass County Mutual Fire Insurance Co.; past Secretary-Treasurer of Lynchburg Farmers Elevator; Member of Farm Bureau Livestock Committee; Secretary and Member of North Dakota Livestock Sanitary Board; Treasurer of Maple River Township for 34 years; Director and President of the Board of the First State Bank, Casselton, ND. He received the Diversified Farming Award from Rotary International in 1969 and in 1973 recognition for outstanding service to Cass County 4-H Youth.

James is survived by his daughter, Jean (Kenneth) Waldschmidt, Burnsville, MN; sons, Lynn Runck, Fargo and Alan Runck, Durbin, ND; grandchildren, Ann Cassarie, St. Louis Park, MN and Gayle (John) Ladwig, Burnsville; great grandchildren, Justin and Hayley Ladwig; sister, Sister Edith Joseph Runck, St. Paul, MN; and sister-in-law, Mable Runck, Fargo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Prudence; children, Neil and Gail; grandson, John Cassarie; parents, Joe and Edith Runck; brothers, Clayton and Bud; sister, Lavern Runck Tintes.

Visitation: Friday from 5 to 7 in the West Funeral Home Chapel, Casselton, ND, with a prayer service at 7.
Funeral Mass: Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 10:30 in St. Leo's Catholic Church, Casselton, with visitation one hour prior to mass.
Burial: St. Leo's Cemetery, Casselton.
