Jane M. Alexander, 95, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at Scottish Rite Park. There will be a visitation held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., and Monday at 1 p.m. prior to the 2 p.m. service at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.

Jane was born in Milwaukee, WI, on March 18, 1913 to Errett and Kathryn Alexander. She earned her bachelor's degree from Drake University and her Masters in Fine Arts degree in Drama from Yale University. She organized the first summer theatre group in Iowa, "The University Players," at Lake Okoboji in 1934. She directed plays and taught acting at Stephens College in Columbia, MO being an Assistant to the famous actress, Maude Adams, and subsequently at Ohio Wesleyan University.

She returned to Des Moines in 1947, working at WHO radio and then at the Iowa Farm Bureau where she worked for 27 years as an Administrative Assistant to the President, retiring in1977. She was a member of First Christian Church, the Des Moines Women's Club, Altrusa Club of Des Moines, Women's Chamber of Commerce and the Des Moines Women's Advertising Club. She was a past board member for Polk County Health Services and the YWCA. She was a past treasurer of the Des Moines Area Religious Council.

Jane is survived by many cousins in Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Ohio, Virginia and Washington, D.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, the Des Moines Women's Club, Scottish Rite Park Good Brotherhood Fund or Drake University c/o the Jane M. Alexander Scholarship Fund.
