Janet Sue (Ferguson) Hanson, 70, of Surprise, AZ, and Vergas, MN, died Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Sanford Health of Fargo, ND, surrounded by her family. Janet was born December 30, 1941, in Drayton, ND, the daughter of Curnal W. and Mary Ellen (Scott) Ferguson. She graduated from Drayton High School and obtained degrees in Elementary Education and Library Science from Mayville State University, Mayville, ND. Janet taught in East Grand Forks, MN, and Lakenheath, England, during which time she traveled extensively through Europe, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East. On June 28, 1968, Janet was united in marriage to Gary Hanson in Drayton, ND. The couple lived and taught in East Grand Forks, MN, Cloquet, MN and Morris, MN, over the next fifteen years. While in Morris, MN, they started their family and Janet made raising their children her full time occupation. In 1982, life brought the family to Hudson, WI. Before Gary and Janet retired in 2002, the family enjoyed the opportunity to spend four years in Naples, Italy, where Janet was active in the American Women's Club. She also assisted the wives of other foreign-service employees to adjust to living in Italy. After their retirement, they began wintering in Arizona and spending summers on Long Lake at Vergas, MN. Janet's deep faith and commitment to her community and church was evidenced in her teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, being active in WELCA, and volunteering her time for Meals on Wheels. Janet loved researching her family heritage due to her selfless devotion to family and desire to preserve her family history. Janet's many other interests included travelling, tending her flowers, reading, and spending moments with her family and friends. She was an avid and skilled homemaker who loved to cook, sew, and raise their children. She is deeply missed. Surviving Janet is her husband, Gary Hanson, Vergas, MN; son, Michael Hanson, Hudson, WI; daughter Christina (Louis) Bailey, Seattle, WA; granddaughters, Kennedy and Karter Hanson, Hudson, WI; sisters, Donna (Steve) Mosher, Omaha, NE and Patricia Ferguson, Dana Point, CA; brothers, Cal Ferguson, Grafton, ND, Richard Ferguson, Fargo, ND, and Curnal Ferguson, Jr., Wentzville, MO, as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding Janet in death are her parents, Curnal W. and Mary Ellen Ferguson.
