Janice Martin died in her home on Thursday, April 19 at the age of 73. Janice was born on November 11, 1938 to Frank and Katheryn Kosmalski and grew up with her four siblings on the family farm in Progress which is now the site of RedTail Golf Course. Janice graduated from high school at St. Mary of the Valley in 1957 and kept in touch until her death with the many lifelong friends she made there. After graduation Janice worked briefly for See's Candies in San Francisco, Sperry Piedmont in Charlottesville, Virginia and later at Tektronix in Beaverton.
Janice married Dexter Martin in 1964 and had two sons, David and Brian. Janice loved being a mother, and put all her energy into raising her family. She served as room mother, chaperone, and chauffeur, opening her home to her sons' countless friends who remember her as a second mother who had an important impact on their lives. Janice was an excellent cook, known for her fabulous dill pickles, fantastic pies and great country cooking that she learned living on the farm. She used that skill later in life as a cook for the Beaverton School District, where she also served as crossing guard and took great pleasure in greeting students on their way to and from school.
Never one to sit still, Janice stayed active after retirement learning to play the piano and to speak Polish, taking daily trips to the gym, attending classes at the Elsie Stuhr Center volunteering many hours at St. Anthony Church, helping to feed the hungry and clean the church. Janice was never happier than when she was entertaining, and hosted many parties and potlucks at her home. Her table was never empty on holidays, and she made a special effort to make sure to open her home to others who might not have family to celebrate with.
Janice will be remembered for her deep faith, devotion to her family, and boundless generosity. She is survived by her brothers Delroy and Joe Kosmalski (Claudia), sister Shirley Fedr, sons David Martin (Sarah) and Brian Martin, grandson Kennin, granddaughter Julia, and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins. Janice will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
A Rosary is scheduled for May 3rd at 5:00 PM, and a funeral Mass will be held Friday May 4 at 10:30 AM, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Tigard. The Mass will be followed by a celebration of Janice's life in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oregon Food Bank.
