Janis Bates Russell Wirtz, 62, Merriam, died December 13, 2011, at Kansas City Hospice House after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer.

Jan was born in Independence, Mo., and had lived in the Kansas City area most of her life. Jan spent 20 years in the employee benefits insurance industry, the last 10 years with Standard Insurance Company as an Underwriter and Manager of sales support staff, before retiring in 2004. In 2006, she launched her own successful business providing non-medical assistance to clients in their homes. Her clients loved her. Jan attended Crosspoints Church (f/k/a Full Faith Church of Love) in Shawnee, Ks. Jan loved God and life and is known for how her positive outlook influenced situations and people.

Her survivors include her husband Robert M. Wirtz of the home; two sons, Charles (Nerissa) Williamson, Lenexa, Ks and David (Kara) Russell, Olathe, Ks; 3 adored grandchildren; a brother, Joseph W. (Marilyn) Bates, Independence; an uncle Robert (Jean) Hogan, Dayton, Ohio; and a step-father Francis O. Blake, Independence, Mo.

Visitation will start at 9:30 AM Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Cross Points Church, 6824 Lackman Rd, Shawnee, KS 66217. Funeral Services to follow at 11:00 AM with cremation will follow. The family suggests contributions to The Care Calendar Organization at www.carecalendar.org.
