Jay was a part of my life for many years. We met in the early 80's when Jay recruited me to sell life insurance with him. I enjoyed learning all about whole and term life insurance, but was never much of a salesman, so I didn’t last long in the field. Several years later we started dating and were together for a number of years. He taught me what it was to have a family and I have many fond memories of our time with Kathy and Moses. When we were all together we took turns picking the activity for the day. From fishing, to ice skating, to rock climbing we had fun. One of my favorite memories is a water balloon fight on a warm summer day. The kids bombarded Jay with balloons while I filled them up at the kitchen sink. We were all pretty wet by the time the balloons ran out.

I loved listening to Jay play the sax whether he was practicing or performing. It was always a treat to hear the Ambassadors. Jay had such a talent and passion for his music. He even patiently taught me a Christmas carol to play for my family one year.

Like Tom, I too spent a lot of time in the canoe. We enjoyed camping and my favorite was catching croppy at Cochiti Lake. You didn’t even need a pole if they were running. We also enjoyed stream fishing in the Jemez Mountains and spending time in Colorado with my family.

Our lives turned in different directions in the mid 90’s. Even thought contact over the past few years has been limited, I have always held Jay and the kids in a special place in my heart. My prayers go out to you.

You listened, you shared, you gave. You shared the word compassion with me from where you are now and I will try to practice living in compassion from here on. I will seek to feel with my heart rather than acquire knowledge with my head. This might be the life lesson I need in order to be of better service to my fellow man, woman and child.

I met Jay over 30 years ago when he invited me to come and play drums with his band. I was just a kid then, 17 or 18, and it was Jay's inspiration that helped me along my path and heavily impacted my decision to go to music school. I spent many years on the road as a musician and stayed in contact with Jay throughout those years. After I had returned to New Mexico, Jay and I formed a band called the Ambassadors and we enjoyed playing music together for several years after that.

Jay and I also spent a fair amount of time in his canoe and enjoyed the warmth of many campfires. Although we spent most of our time together playing music, it was the fishing and camping that bring back the fondest memories of Jay. He loved the outdoors and I am blessed to have shared that part of his life with him.

The hardest part for me about Jay's passing is that I didn't get to say goodbye. It had been several months since I had last spoke with Jay, but that was not unusual for us. Still, all I needed to do was pick up the phone and we would be right back to where we had left off. I'll miss that greatly.

Although I am deeply saddened by the loss of my friend, I know that he is at peace and with God today. I hope to have the strength and ability to share that peace of mind with those who knew and loved Jay. I am assured that the day will come when we are joined again with Jay as well as with all our loved ones that have gone before us.
