Jeanette K. Yelland, 90, formerly of Marquette and Merritt Island, Florida, died Friday morning, January 6, 2012 at Tendercare Nursing Center in Munising. Mrs. Yelland was born on July 6, 1921 in Republic, Michigan, a daughter of the late William Frank and Aina W. (Isaacson) Karbum. She was a 1940 graduate of Negaunee High School and was a National Honor Society member. Jeanette was employed as a secretary in the Financial Aid and Student Employment office at Northern Michigan University for many years, retiring in July of 1986. It was at that time that she moved to Merritt Island, Florida for the next 23 years where she became active in the senior center in Rockledge, Florida and also enjoyed being a member of the Merritt Square Mall Walkers and was active in the Merritt Island Methodist Church. Jeanette is survived by one daughter, Sherrill (Wayne) Karppinen of Sterling Heights, MI; two sons, Roy (Debra) Yelland of Merritt Island, FL and Robert Yelland of Marquette; 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; two sisters, Elaine Pulfrey of Ewa, HI and Carol Sedlock of Gwinn, MI; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents were a daughter, Barbara Knight; brother, William Karbum; grandson, Lucas Yelland and daughter-in-law, Margaret Yelland. Funeral services will be held in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steven McCoy, pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be on Monday at the funeral home from 4 to 6 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Taylor, Larry Heiskanen and Bob Pecotte. Mrs. Yelland's obituary can also be viewed at www.canalefuneral.com where relatives and friends may leave a note of remembrance.
