Jennie was born the daughter of Minor Frances Sims and Myrtle C. Blair on December 29, 1915, near Ladora. She was raised on the family farm southwest of Ladora and educated at country schools near her home.
Following her education, she was employed at the Ladora Hospital. She was united in marriage to Carter Atkinson on March 20, 1941, at the home of Harold and Hazel Tanner in Ladora. To this union was born their son Gene. The couple farmed near Ladora and Jennie was a homemaker.
Following the death of her husband, she attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids and received her LPN degree. She moved to Iowa City and was a nurse at the University of Iowa Hospital. She moved back to Ladora and was employed at the Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo.
Jennie was a member of the Ladora United Methodist Church and the Victor American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed watching and attending Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball games. She enjoyed traveling and took annual trips with her friend Kay Davis.
Jennie is survived by her son, Gene Atkinson of Marengo, Iowa; her grandchildren, Martha (Kevin) Meyer of Keswick, Iowa, and John Atkinson of Sterling, Illinois; her great grandchildren, Ella Meyer of Keswick, Christian and Tyler Atkinson of Sterling, Illinois.
Jennie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carter Atkinson on April 2, 1968; her granddaughter, Jennifer Atkinson on April 19, 1986; her brothers, John and Ray Sims; and her sisters, Edna Wyant, Ethel McClenathan, Dassie Maschman, Ruth Kruse, and Ann Madison.
