Jennie Margaret Peek Browning departed this life on February 8, 2012 at the young age of 94. Born on February 17, 1917 in the community of Boxelder, Texas, she was the youngest daughter of Lester Jerod Peek and Cora Stout Peek. Preceding her in death were her husband, Robert H. Browning, her sister, Irene Colker and brothers Ebb Peek, Dale Peek and L.J. Peek. She is survived by her sons Robert L. Browning and daughter-in-law Phyllis Fyfe Browning and Timothy R. Browning and daughter-in-law Teresa Luccioni Browning along with a grandson, Stephen A. Browning. Jennie is also survived by her nieces Dinah Colker (Ross), Paula Miller (Phillip), Marilyn Martin, Pam Smith (Jerry) and nephews Jerod Peek (Janie) and Ted Minick (Cindy).
Jennie was educated at East Texas State Teacher's College and graduated with a degree in education. She taught elementary school for over 28 years in Texas and Louisiana, including Jefferson Elementary, Mid-City Baptist School and J.C. Ellis Elementary School.
She was Christian woman and a dedicated wife and mother who gave of herself every day for her family. Growing up in a very small community of farmers and cattle ranchers which was settled by her Peek ancestors in the early 1850's, she learned the value of family and good friends. Her Stout ancestors settled in Texas in 1817. Her great grandfather and great, great grandfather fought for the Army of the Republic of Texas for independence from Mexico. Truly, she and her family were the salt of the earth and thus were able to impart strong family values to her sons.
She was by all measures an exceptional mother and a model teacher who will be missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank the staff of Woldenberg Village and in particular Allison, Sharon, Mary and Deedy for their love and care of our mother over the past 4 years.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to either Gilliam Cemetery Association, attention Jane Ann Bratton, 9347 FM44, Annona, Texas 75550, or Salem Baptist Church, attention Ms. Casino Baird, 157 CR 4621, Annona, Texas 75550.
A brief graveside service will be performed inside All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 11AM. Immediate family and close friends are invited to attend.
