COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Jerome "Pete" Chavis, 91, will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Chavis died Monday, December 26, 2011. Born August 11, 1920 in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Caroline Driggers Chavis. He was married to Clara Debble in 1948 and they lived in Columbia.
Jerome "Pete" was a WWII veteran and retired from the Federal Government at Fort Jackson. Jerome was an active member of Shandon Baptist Church where he was a member of the Senior Adult 60+ Sunday School Class and served as Head Usher.
Mr. Chavis is survived by two children, Jerome B. Chavis (Pam) of Columbia, Maribeth Chavis Harvey (Mack) of Chapin; two grandchildren, Shawn K. Dennis and Brian A. Chavis. He was predeceased by his wife, Clara; four sisters and three brothers.
