Gerardo "Jerry" Rene Garza, 51, of Oxnard passed away on January 10, 2012. Jerry went home to be with his Lord after losing his yearlong battle with cancer.
Jerry was born on November 23, 1960 in Laredo, Texas. He is survived by his mother Santiaga Guerrero, stepfather Alfonso Guerrero, brother Reynaldo Garza, Jr., sister-in-law Mary Lorraine Garza, as well as numerous stepsiblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and family. Jerry is preceded in death by his father Reynaldo Garza, Sr.
Jerry is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Edith. They met while working at Mervyn's department store 20 years ago. Jerry was known for taking his time and moving at his own pace. It was not until 8 years after they met that Jerry worked up the courage to ask Edith out on a date. Their first date was on May 24, 1997. They were married 5 years later on July 27, 2002. Many couples claim to be soul mates, but Jerry and Edith truly were. They were meant for one another and they completed each other perfectly.
Jerry is also survived by his two beautiful and amazing children, Emily Angel and Eric Daniel. His family was his light and life. Jerry enjoyed the small things in life like watching his children play in the backyard and taking them on family outings.
Jerry graduated from Hueneme High School in 1979. He went on to pursue his Associates Degree from Oxnard College. Jerry was employed by UPS for 25 years. He loved his job and his co-workers. He was a proud UPS employee and Teamster. He was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus Oxnard Council 750 for nearly 20 years. In his free time, Jerry loved volunteer work.
Jerry was an amazing and mesmerizing storyteller who would regale you with his life adventures. He had the ability to spark up a conversation with a stranger and by the end, they would be best of friends. He was a sincere and gentle man with a loving soul. Jerry had a contagious smile that lit up the room. His sense of humor was wonderful and imaginative. He always loved to say, "Get away with as much as you can before you get kicked out!"
Jerry loved Dr. Pepper and drank several cans daily. His "man cave" was full of his favorite Dr. Pepper memorabilia. He had an intense passion for music and loved rockin' out at concerts with Edith. In his spare time he was an avid golfer and camper. As Jerry devoted more time to his family, some of these passions took a back seat. He was a genius on the grill and loved having friends and family over for impromptu barbeques.
We raise a toast to your amazing life Jerry, with what else but a Dr. Pepper. You passed too quickly from our lives, but your memory will always remain in our hearts. You will be sorely missed by all those privileged enough to know you.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 13, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. at the Oratory of Santa Clara Mortuary in Oxnard. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the Oratory of Santa Clara Mortuary in Oxnard. Burial will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery. Reception will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Oxnard following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the children's tuition trust fund at Citibank, C/O Rey Robles, (818) 889-4263.
