Jesse Alvarado Guerra Jr., a life-long resident of San Marcos, passed away on Tuesday October 1, 2013. Born in San Marcos, Jesse had an immeasurable commitment to and love for his family, community and country. He joined the U.S. Marine Corp in the 1960s, rose to the rank of Sergeant and continued his service to his country by serving in the Marine Corp Reserves for several years. After leaving the Marine Corp, Jesse joined the San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) in 1969 where he served as a Patrol Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Head of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and Interim Police Chief. During his 32 year tenure at the SMPD, Jesse helped establish the department's Blue Santa Program, a program which has provided Christmas gifts to hundreds of disadvantaged children and a program of which he was very proud. Jesse served as a respected role-model to many young people by coaching several youth league baseball teams over a span of many years. Guerra's commitment to public service continued during his tenure as Security Captain at the Hays County Justice Center for 12 years. He will be remembered as a strong, loving and caring individual who was very respectful of others and respected by so many who knew him. A loving father, son, and brother, Jesse is survived by his wife Dora Rivas Guerra, two sons Jesse Guerra III and John Anthony Guerra, both of whom serve in law enforcement and daughter Deborah Guerra with extensive service in Health Care/Medical. Jesse will be greatly missed by his grand-children Marquee, John Jr., Avery, Paityn, and Gavin. Guerra's extended family also includes his mother, Alice Rangel, Step-Father John Rangel; brothers, Rudy Guerra, Fred Guerra, and Edward Guerra; sisters, Nora Cruz and Sally Bossier, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins and his beloved brothers and sisters in law enforcement for whom he cared immensely and had high regard. He is preceded in death by his father Jesse Guerra Sr., brothers, Henry Guerra, George Guerra, and Arthur Guerra, and grand-daughter Jaiden Guerra. Jesse's family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Heart to Heart Hospice staff for their loving care and support.
