Jesse V. Spurlin, Jr., 93, known to many as "Junior" peacefully passed away Feb. 28, 2011, in his home. He was born Nov. 5, 1917, in Little Rock, AR, and lived most of his life in the Hampton Roads area. After his retirement as Carpenter Foreman for Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1980 he went to work for Krisp-Pak Company, Inc. as Maintenance Supervisor, where he remained until retiring at age 91. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Norfolk, VA where he served as usher for many years. He most recently attended Holy Family Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, VA. Jesse, a man of few words, was a loving husband, father and grandfather and known to many for his dry sense of humor. He loved following the Redskins and when his grandson was participating in a sporting event, you could always find him there to make sure the refs were properly calling the game. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 70 years, Frances; his daughter, Sandra and her husband, Paul Battaglia, of Virginia Beach, VA; his grandson, John-Paul (J-P) Battaglia, of Chestertown, MD; and his sister, Lillian of Little Rock, AR. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Holy Family. Following the Mass, the family will receive friends at the home of Sandy and Paul Battaglia. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Food Pantry of Church of the Holy Family, 1279 N. Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23454 or Lunch Ministry of First Lutheran Church, 1301 Colley Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23517.
