   Daina AndersonA teacher should never out live her students. I taught Jesse at Gahr High School in the Art Technology Academy. It is hard to remember each student well that enters and exits my classroom, except for a special few. Teachers remember the ones that light up the classroom, make the day a little better because they are around or make you laugh- those are the ones you remember. Jesse was that kind of student.    Jesse walked the talk and was very much like his patron saint, St. Anthony. We witnessed Jesse's involvement in church, in particular, his joyful singing in the choir. These words by Jesse himself give us pause to reflect on how well we are emulating the lives of our chosen saints. Jesse inspires us to do so more consciously.

   Dear Father,
   I have learned many lessons throughout my journey in life. One of which, is that without God by my side, there is no life. In my perspective, I feel that life is a long journey in which we are sent to fulfill a particular mission. As that person journeys in life, they will experience the gifts of joy, happiness, laughter, and being able to do great things for people. All of these gifts came from one person, and that person is God. That is why I feel that I am ready to be confirmed this year. I am ready to say that I will truly accept God within my heart so he can guide me through the good times, and the bad times throughout my journey in life. My commitment to the Catholic faith is to continue applying my spiritual knowledge to help others. I have volunteered for the past couple of years as a teacher's aide and have helped children prepare for their first communion. I plan to continue helping the parish community in any way I can. Whether it is being involved in church or somewhere else, I will do my best to be helpful. Personally, I feel that the most important thing about being Catholic is being one with God, and having the ability to communicate with God through prayer, and having the sacrament of reconciliation available, it allows us to get closer to God. I strongly feel that religious education instruction has helped me learn a lot about my faith. It has helped guide me through the many obstacles in which I have encountered in life. I have chosen my sponsor because I feel he is a great role model. He is actively involved in our parish and has taken interest in helping me complete my confirmation program.    I have prayed and will continue to pray for the Guzman family. The passing of Jesse is one of those events that make us question why? How could this happen? He was so nice, humble, with a quiet serenity that inspired a simple smile for hello! My faith tells me he is now in a better place. I am glad because souls like Jesse's deserve to be in a better place. I pray that God gives his parents and sisters the strength and may they find peace in the thought that he lived a short life but a good life and we are all somehow better people because our lives crossed with Jesse. God has a plan that sometimes seems harsh, but I thank him for giving me the gift of knowing Jesse. He was a walking smile with little bit of sun in it. Now that he is free of pain and the weight of this world I know he will continue to smile at all of us. I have no doubt of where he is, I have no doubt of who he is with. 10. Remembering Jesse Guzman
    Dealing with a sudden death is never easy.. a friend once told me a different way of looking at death. She explains, "you know that feeling when a baby is born on earth, the family is in wonder and awe about how beautiful this God given gift is? A new life to the world" she further explains, "well can you believe wen someone dies on earth, the people in heaven have the EXACT SAME awe and wonder of new life up there in heaven?" Our faith teaches us that this life is not the end, and we firmly believe in life ever after. 11. Our Family has been at Holy Family Parish for approximately 30 yrs. We feel so blessed to have Holy Family as our second home. Everyone has been awesome and no words can be found to express our constant gratitude. We truly are a Holy Family and Community. May God Bless your homes and your families. Make sure to always make time to kiss and hug your children as our family did with Jesse. No regrets or remorse on our end. We believe we gave all our love to Jesse and that we cared for Jesse with as much love as we could. He was able to graduate from Cal State Long Beach as a computer engineer last Christmas, now through this experience we are certain that he was also able to demonstrate kindness to those he encountered, he loved praising God through singing with the 5:30pm choir, he was part of the HFYA. Holy Family was his playground on earth and now he is enjoying the playground in Heaven. ♥
