Feeling fulfilled and blessed with love from friends and family, Joan Hengy Stawara, 76, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2009 at VNA Hospice in Vero Beach, Florida.

Joan was born in Detroit, MI, on September 8, 1932. In 1958, she visited relatives in Vero Beach and upon returning home to Michigan she told her husband, Frank, “I have found paradise!” Soon Vero Beach became their home and Frank and Joan resided there together for 49 years.

Joan graduated from Dearborn High School in 1950. She went on to graduate from Michigan State with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. While teaching PE at Redford Union High School, she continued her education and received her master’s degree in English from Eastern Michigan University. When she moved to Vero Beach, Joan was offered and accepted a job to become the first Physical Education teacher at St. Edward’s School.

Joan was a devout Catholic and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. She was known and loved for her spontaneity, drive and determination. Friends and family remember her best as an avid tennis player at the Riomar Bay Yacht Club and a lover of golf at Grand Harbor Country Club. She fulfilled her days visiting and traveling with her family but especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow and flourish.

She will be missed by many.

Joan is survived by her husband of 53 years, Frank Stawara, four children and their spouses, Frank A. Stawara II (Katrina) of Orlando, FL, Joseph A. Stawara (Michelle), Melrine Luethje (David) and Ann Marie Jacobs (Mike) all of Vero Beach and 10 grandchildren; Frank John, Adam, Anna and Mary Alice of Orlando, FL and Taylor, Caroline, Deanne, David, Clayton and Kara of Vero Beach. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Willis, “Uncle Bill”, Hengy.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, 32960 in memory of Joan Stawara.

SERVICES: Visitation will be 6pm-8pm on May 20, 2009 at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach with a Prayer Vigil to be held at 7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on May 21, 2009 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Vero Beach. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Ft. Pierce, FL.
