I think I remember your love of Sandy Neck in stories you told.

i miss mom and her dynamic ways. her sense of humor and her tenderness. a true character. i will miss picking berries with her, digging clams with her, long drives, and walks and meals. and more and more and more.

Your mother has a very distinguishing laugh that I can hear in my minds ear. She lives on in our memories. I've read what others have said, and it is so true that your mother's welcoming, friendly and endearing manner connected her with everyone she met. For many years, Joan converted texts for the blind on her braille machine. One year I told her that in second grade we read "Louis Braille" and would she send me something in braille.

Sure enough, around the end of Sept. I had a "braille" letter translated in her handwriting along with some other information. Each year I take that out and talk to my students about what Joan did and how she helped blind students and shared her knowledge with us. Joan explained to me later that her services were no longer needed because of changes in technology. But think of dedicating an entire summer to create one of those bookS! What a committment. I respect and apprecaite all she did and value her kindness to me and the students who will continue to hear about what she has done. I will always remember the image of Joanie dressed up for the horribles parade with a mop on her head and a broomstick up one sleeve and out the other prancing around like a Sandy Neck Scarecrow! She had such an amazing spirit and sense of fun, I just can't imagine summers at the neck without her presence.

Wow, Joan had a character and heart like no other. Always game for a fun conversation, an outing, some laughs. Always made me and others at home in her presence. The memories go way back, ranging from early childhood to formative years to just this past summer. Sandy Neck just will not be the same without her hearty voice and keen wit. Our deepest sympathy to Joan's family. How many great memories we shared the three summers we were next-door neighbors on Sandy Neck: the volley-ball games after dinner, walks on the beach, just watching boats and birds and people - and there was always a dog in the mix. Her good humor and ready smile will be greatly missed by each of our family members.

Mrs. Switzer is a true icon of the Sandy Neck I grew up with and I will miss her presence greatly.

Inevitably, we would be back in bed at the house within a few hours (I am not sure we ever made it to the morning) and she would laugh and laugh and then we would plead with her to help us haul in our stuff, including milk cartons full of stuff! She was an amazing woman and she will be so missed, especially on Sandy Neck. I am sure her children and grandchildren will continue her lagacy there....it is an incredible one. Mrs. Switzer was such a great light of happyness at Sandy Neck. Loved her smile and cheerful spirit. Always such a joy to visit. I recall many great sunny warm summer days vsititing with her. Her kindness always brought warmth to my heart. She will be missed. Love never fails. 1 cor 13:8
