Ms. Joann E. (Messner) Zechmeister, 73 of 123 Hamilton Avenue, Waynesboro, PA and a guest of Manorcare Health Services, Chambersburg for a short time, entered into eternal rest at 10:25 A.M. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 in the nursing home following a short illness. She was born on January 30, 1938 in Waynesboro; she was the daughter of the late John J. and Mary Evelyn (Ruth) Messner. Ms. Zechmeister graduated from Waynesboro Senior High School with the class of 1956. Joann served in the United States Army during peacetime, serving in Germany. Following her discharge from the military, she moved to Hopkinsville, KY, living in that area for 40 years. Ms. Zechmeister moved back to Waynesboro in 2003. While living in Hopkinsville, she managed a pawn shop and eventually owning and operated the same shop. She retired in 2003. She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church of Waynesboro and the national AARP. She is survived by one sister, Margaret B. "Peggy" Warner of Waynesboro and six nephews, and a number of great-nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her companion, Max Reed, and one sister, Mary B. Keller. A celebration of her life will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 21, 2012 in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 112 East Second Street, Waynesboro with Mother Linda Watkins officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Family will receive friends one hour prior to services in the church. The family request the omission of flowers, and contributions may be made to the Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Road, Waynesboro, PA 17268.
