Funeral services for Joanne Bennington McFarland, 73 of West Monroe will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at McGuire United Methodist Church in West Monroe. Officiating will be Pastor Michi Head and Associate Pastor Chris McLain. She was born September 10, 1938 and passed away February 8, 2012. A native of Ohio, Joanne moved to West Monroe in 1970, raised her family and quickly became involved in the community and McGuire United Methodist Church. Known by many as Mama Jo because of her loving and caring nature, she was a friend to anyone she met. Always energetic and active in many sports, she easily made life-long friends on the softball field, lakes, and the river. At age 70, she decided it was time for tap dance lessons and enjoyed many performances with her group. She was active in Quota International, Republican Women, American Heart Association and many other civic organizations. She dearly loved her 10 years of working as the director of volunteer services at Glenwood Hospital and the wonderful people who volunteered their time. Her final days were spent at home surrounded by family and friends. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Helen Bennington; her sister, Judy McFarland; and her sweet step-sons, Clay McFarland and Adam McFarland. She is survived by her loving husband, Walt McFarland; son Jimmy Wallsten (Alan); daughter, Joellen Freeman (Robbie); son, Jarrett Spurgeon (Tamara); step-daughters, Leigh Sarfati (Peter), Kathleen Barth (Michael), Maureen McFarland (fiancée Bron), and Allison McFarland; step-son, Kent McFarland; granddaughters, Jenni Killian (Robbie), Madison Williams, Brooklyn Spurgeon, Marley VanWel, and Meghan Barth; grandsons, Kyle Williams, Kendall Spurgeon, Michael Barth, and Theo Sarfati; great grandchildren Ayden and Lyla Grace; her brother Bruce Bennington (KayAnn), brother-in-law, Howard McFarland; and nephews Doug and Jeff McFarland. Joanne had 'adopted' many others throughout her life that she held dear until her death. Honorary pallbearers will be Derrel & Ginger Graham, Weldon & Junnie Gage, Niki Wood, Kyle Williams, Robbie Killian, and the entire Glenwood Auxiliary. Visitation will be held Monday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe and Tuesday from 12:00 noon until the 2:00 PM service time, at McGuire United Methodist Church in West Monroe. Memorials may be made to Glenwood Auxiliary or McGuire United Methodist Church.
