Joe D. Tavarez was born September 8, 1931. He passed away July 9, 2009 after battling a long illness. He was a member of the VA and DAV Organizations. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked at Kelly Air Base, working on air-crafts for years. He was later self-employed in the produce business. He was a very kind and generous man, be believed in helping children and people in need and gave donations to several charities. He was very proud of earning his associates degree from St. Philips College. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Josie, Corinna, Abel, Ruben, Roy and Robert. He is survived by his wife Ida Tavarez; his children, Debra (Shelton) Ivey, Denise (Richard) Martinez; Geroge Tovart; grandchildren Monique, Gabriel, Jacob, Marissa, Joseph, Kevin, Steven; and 2 great grandchildren, Ayden, and Lorelei. ServicesVisitation will begin at 6:00 PM Tuesday, July 14, 2009 with a rosary to begin at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Mass of the resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church with interment to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
