Joey Brian Rhode, proud denizen of Austin, died Friday night, January 27 at the age of 44.

Joey had recently obtained his paramedic badge and was on the threshold of a new career, an endeavor he pursued with his customary fervor and which gave him great satisfaction. He was an advocate for the homeless and lent his voice and passion to aid the Capital Area Homeless Alliance in their effort to provide services to the homeless where they lived. The Alliance went on to build the ARCH, a multi-service facility in downtown Austin.

What can you say about Joey? He was a talker. And he could hold forth on a wide variety of topics. His vast array of knowledge spanned the spectrum from national politics to home improvement to local music. Always eager to learn (and teach), he enjoyed nothing more than an animated discussion. Music played an integral role in Joey's life. His tastes ranged from punk rock to show tunes, either of which could be heard coming through the screen door of his home on a summer night. For many years, Joey and Annette lived downtown in the heart of Austin's live music district, and many musicians who graced the nearby stages were lucky enough to find themselves being entertained in this unique household. The legendary house on 8th Street was a social and cultural touchstone for their large family of friends and the site of many remarkable gatherings. In time they moved with their happy pack of dogs and cats to a home they purchased in a quieter neighborhood in East Austin. Joey also enjoyed a good round of disk golf.

The son of Roberta and Joseph Rhode, Joey is survived by his wife Annette; sisters, Holly Dyer and Suzy Chambers; brothers, Rob and John Rhode; nieces and nephews, Michelle Dyer, David Dyer, Melissa Dyer, Jordan Rhode, Brett Rhode, Justin Rhode, Kayla Chambers, Brad Harrelson, Melissa Rutledge, and Sean Rutledge; trusted friend, Linda Jean Smith; dogs, Fred, Boogie, and Lucy, and cats, Polly, Spot, Mongo, Tweak, Cleo, and Negro Modelo.

He always said he wanted to help people when they were having their worst days--the reason he became a paramedic. A loyal friend, a good man, and a hero to his wife, Joey will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in his name to two charities that were very important to him: http://www.austinecho.org or www.emancipet.org

A Memorial Service will be held to honor Joey Rhode on February 26th.
