Joey Bret Williams died on Saturday, October 9th, 2010 in Portland of an apparent heart attack after playing a game of football with his friends. Joey was born the oldest of three boys on December 15, 1969, in Watertown, SD. As a child, he water-skied, hunted, and played all manner of sports. As a teenager, he became interested in music and formed the first of many bands. After graduating from Watertown High School in 1988, he briefly attended college before relocating to Portland in 1991. During his early years in the Pacific Northwest, Joey developed a deep love of salmon, steelhead and trout fishing, for which he developed his alias: “Joey Steelhead”. Although his life was short, Joey took every chance he could to fish, spending thousands of hours on the water. In 1999, Kyra Roxanne Williams was born, the first of Joey’s three beautiful children. Joey graduated from Portland State University with a degree in biology in 2000. In 2001, Joey began working for Synarc, Inc., where he worked as a clinical data manager until he passed away. In September 2002, he married Stacy Zografos. They had two beautiful boys together, William Dean and Brady John. Joey loved sports, especially football and the Green Bay Packers. Later in life, he took an interest in bow-hunting and turkey hunting. He loved to golf, jokingly telling his friends that he hoped to make the Senior PGA tour someday. Always looking for new adventures, Joey had recently started bow-hunting for deer and elk as well as turkey hunting. Joey loved rock and roll, and music was his constant companion, whether at work or play. He played bass in the Portland-based bands the Plaid Pantry Project, the Decliners, and, notably, a Forehead reunion show in 2007. He is survived by his wife, Stacy; three children Kyra, William, and Brady; his parents, Gary and Susan Williams of Watertown; his brothers, Jason of Montana and Jeff (Boomer) of Rapid City, SD and their families; a niece and two nephews; cousins; aunts and uncles; and many, many friends. “The Joey Williams Memorial Fund” fund has been established for the benefit of Stacy and the kids at Wells Fargo Bank. You may make a deposit in the name of the fund at any Wells Fargo location. There will be a public viewing on Friday, October 15th from 5 pm to 8 pm at Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial Funeral Home in Portland. There will also be a celebration of Joey’s life beginning at 1 pm at Barton Park, on the banks of the Clackamas River in the Southeast Portland area.
