John A. Hutchins, 92, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2011 in Annapolis, MD after a brief illness.
He was born in Schenectady, NY and lived in Erie, PA and Curitiba, Brazil before finally settling in Annapolis, MD. He graduated from Alleghany College in Meadville, PA. John went on to receive his Masters degree from The Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University and his PhD from the American University in Washington, DC. After 4 years as the Director of the American Cultural Institute, US Department of State in Curitiba, Brazil, he began his academic career in 1949 at the US Naval Academy teaching Portuguese, Spanish and Political Science. Professor Hutchins retired in 1983, but remained at the Naval Academy as an annuitant. He retired from the US Naval Reserve as a LCDR.
John was an avid amateur radio operator, assisting in numerous worldwide humanitarian efforts. He loved to travel, secured his private pilot's license and flew his airplane with his wife throughout Latin America. He was instrumental in establishing the Naval Academy Flying Club.
Beloved husband of the late Joan B. Hutchins (2007), he is survived by his sister, Ruth Morrison, and his children, Richard Hutchins of Oakton, VA, John Hutchins of Clifton, VA and Carol Nietmann of Huntingtown, MD. He was the grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of five. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Services will be held on Monday, November 28 at 2:00 PM in St. Andrew's Chapel at the US Naval Academy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the US Naval Academy Foundation or Hospice of the Chesapeake.
