John Alfred “Al” Frederick, 92, a lifelong resident of Springfield, died at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at his home. Al was born on February 14, 1914 in Springfield, the son of Ace L. and Minnie Cogdal Frederick. He married Melba Engel on November 26, 1934 in Springfield, IL. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1933. He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Golden Arrow Division of the First Army in Germany. He was employed with Sears Roebuck, Coca Cola, Buecker Plumbing and Springfield Mechanical Corp, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local No. 137 for forty-nine years. He was a member and Elder Emeritus of First Christian Church in Springfield. He was also a member of the Springfield Elks Lodge 158. He enjoyed gardening, music and poetry. He was an avid environmentalist and was also an artist and a carpenter. He considered raising his four daughters his greatest accomplishment in life. Al was a kind and caring gentleman who will be remembered for his great sense of humor and love of his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: David C. Frederick. He is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Melba Frederick of Springfield; four daughters: Shirley Tonjes of Albuquerque, NM; Janet Frederick of Ruidoso, NM and Suellen and Jeri Frederick both of Springfield; five grandchildren: Rick, Gary and Stephen Tonjes; Lisa Hillman and Emma Frederick; seven great-grandchildren: Cody, Eric, Jerra, Jessica, Brandt, Julia and Luken Tonjes; three sisters: Adele Dirreen, Mary Hill, and Doris Bridges all of Springfield and many nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Irwin officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, C/O J. Alfred Frederick Memory Fund, 700 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL 62703 The family of John Alfred “Al” Frederick is being served by Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield.
