John William Coltrane was one of the most influential musicians and composers in the history of Jazz. He played the saxophone, tenor and later soprano saxophone, in several bands; most notably with Miles Davis, with whom he toured and recorded on and off from 1955 to 1960.
In 1960 John formed his own band and he led groups until his death in 1967. An excellent history of his musical career and discography of his recordings with his own groups and with others can be found in the Wikipedia article link from this page.
