John Douglas “Jack” Hughes, 88, of Gaylord, passed away Saturday February 27, 2010 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. John was born on July 12, 1921 in Beaverton, to the late Laurence and Clara(McKimmy) Hughes. Jack served as a Staff Sargent in the Army Air Corp During WW II from 1939 to 1945. He was married on June 27, 1948 in Midland, to Lillian B. Kowalke, who preceded him in death on May 23, 2008. Jack served the State of Michigan as a Michigan State Police Trooper. John and Lillian traveled Michigan as John was assigned to different posts, including Detroit, Jackson, Houghton Lake, and Gaylord, where John retired in 1977 as Lieutenant and Commander of the Post at Gaylord. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Durango Soaring Club, Gaylord Rotary, a life member of the Beaverton VFW, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Gaylord.. Surviving Mr. Hughes are his daughter, Patti(Art) Roznowski of Cheboygen; three sons, Michael Hughes of Indonesia, Douglas(MaryAnn) Hughes of Colorado, and David(Kathy) Hughes of Colorado; Nine Grandchildren; Four Great Grandchildren; Sister, Harriet Thurston Balluf of Sterling Heights; Three Brothers, Jerry Hughes of Goodrich, Maynard Hughes of Midland, and James(Margaret) Hughes of Lansing; several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by three brothers; Larry, Robert, and Pete. Funeral services for Mr. John Douglas “Jack” Hughes will be conducted 11:00AM Friday March 5, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1354 S. Otsego Avenue, Gaylord with Rev. Todd Brunworth officiating. Interment will be in Dale Cemetery, Beaverton. Visitation will be held Friday morning at the church from 10:00AM until the service time at 11:00AM. Visitation will also be held at the church on Thursday March 4, 2010 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM.
