Vernon - John Frederick "Fred" Green, 71, of Vernon, died August 9, 2011 at his home following a brief illness. He was born on May 14, 1940 in Chester, PA to Frederick & Marie (Welsh) Green. He attended school in Boothwyn, PA and graduated from Chichester High School in 1958. He went on to attend Westchester University and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Physical Education and a Master's Degree in Athletic Administration. On August 25, 1962 he married Joan Moore who survives. Fred pursued his coaching career in Oxford, PA establishing the football program at Oxford Area High School as its first coach. In 1973 he was invited to become Athletic Director of Brattleboro Union High School, where he spent the remainder of his career. He was dedicated to making infrastructure improvements including the installation of a modern track, new lights and proudly instituted Title 9 sports for girls. He also established ice hockey and lacrosse at BUHS. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie among the state's athletic directors and held a deep appreciation for his staff at BUHS. Fred was elected twice as President of the Vermont State Athletic Director's Association and was inducted into the Vermont Principal's Association Hall of Fame in 2008. Fred's personal interests included gardening, fishing, and most of all family. He enjoyed summer vacations with his family in Ocean City, NJ and on Martha's Vineyard. He was especially proud of his three grandchildren, supporting them in all of their endeavors. Fred was a member of the Vernon Union Church where he served as an Elder. Fred was survived by his wife Joan, of nearly 49 years, two sons; John, Jr. of Gulfport, MS and Thomas and his wife Amy, of Westborough, MA, his sister, A. Leslie Hickman an her husband Bill, of Smyrna, DE and the loves of his life, his three grandchildren; John Green, III and his wife Marianne of New London, NH, SGT Alex Green of Fort Stewart, GA and Grace Green of Westboro, MA. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 12:00 noon at Saint Michael's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Tyler Cemetery in Vernon. Calling hours will be held at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BUHS Athletic Fund, 131 Fairground Road, Brattleboro, VT 05301 Attn: Chris Sawyer or to the Vernon Union Church, P.O.
