Mr. John Harvey Rinehart, 85, Smithsburg, MD, died Friday evening, February 3, 2012 in Leesburg Regional Medical Center, Leesburg, FL. He had been in failing health for the past three years. Born September 23, 1926 in Ringgold, MD he was the son of the late D. Eldred and Mary E. (Davis) Rinehart. He was a lifelong resident of Ringgold and in his later years lived part time in Leesburg, FL. Mr. Rinehart graduated with the 1945 class of Smithsburg High School. Following graduation he partnered with his father in the family orchard business, currently operating as Rinehart Orchards Inc. He was preceded in death by his first wife Elizabeth "Betty" (Kerfoot) Rinehart on December 20, 1979. He remarried on January 20, 1996 to Martha L. (Ashby) Rinehart. She died on September 27, 2006. Mr. Rinehart was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, Waynesboro, PA where he served on the church finance board and was a Mason for over 60 years as a member of the following organizations: Salem Lodge F. & A.M. Lodge #196, Smithsburg, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1957; Scottish Rite of Consistory and Royal Order of Jesters, both of Cumberland, MD; Hagerstown Shrine Club; and Hagerstown Chapter #89 Order of the Easter Star. He was also a member of Maryland Horticulture Society, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #378, Hagerstown and Rotary Club of Long Meadow, Hagerstown. He enjoyed boating, golfing and traveling. Mr. Rinehart is survived by three daughters: Mary Edna Leedy, Harrisburg, PA, Gina E. Ferree, Midlothian, VA, Jo Ellen Cornelius, Piney Point, MD; a son: John D. "JD" Rinehart, Smithsburg, MD; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Mary Susan Elgin, Hagerstown; his companion Edna M. Naylor of Smithsburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 11, 2012, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro, with Pastor Amy Messler officiating. Burial will follow in Ringgold Cemetery. A Masonic funeral will be held by the members of Salem Lodge #196 at 11:00 A.M., Saturday morning, just prior to the religious service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services, Saturday morning, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: The Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, 3551 North Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19140; or the charity of your choice.
