John I. Novich 66, of Granite City passed away on Monday, April 16, 2012 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. John was born on August 28, 1945 in Granite City. He was a retired Lieutenant with the Madison County Sheriffs Department, past Vice President of the Cape Fair, Missouri Eagles Lodge #4278 and a member of the Granite City V.F.W. Post 1300. He enjoyed his days of serving and helping guide young people through life as a cottage parent along with his wife at the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch. In John's spare time he enjoyed being outside and fishing. He was a fan of the Godfather movies and Clint Eastwood movies. He liked Corvettes and his friends and family gave him the nickname of "Smooth". He will be remembered for the love of his family and the good times shared together. He is survived by and will be missed by his wife; Rita (Hutchinson) Novich; his children, Michael & (Diane) Novich of New Port Richey, FL, Steven & (Rose) Novich of Troy, IL, Lyn & (Brent) Broshow of Troy, IL, LeeAnn & (Rob) Hoffman of New Port Richey, FL, Robert & (Kim) Hutchinson of Granite City; brothers, Mark Novich of St. Louis, MO and Gary & (Kitty) Novich of Granite City. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Mary (Modric) Novich and his sister Mary. Friends may call on Monday, April 23, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
