NORTH GRAFTON: John Joseph Joyce Jr., 67, of North Grafton, died peacefully on Thursday May 26, 2011 at home after living courageously with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) for several years. Jack was the beloved husband of Eileen (O'Neill) Joyce, devoted father of John J. III and his wife Laura Lewandowski MD of Worcester and Kristin Joyce of Dudley. He was also the loving brother of Monica Hamill of Ithaca NY, caring brother in law of Nancy Kenny wife of Patrick Kenny, Kathleen O'Neill both of Quincy, Annmarie O'Neill wife of Bruce Nash of Weymouth. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. Jack was born September 30, 1943 in Gardner, the son of the late John J. and Katherine (Eckl) Joyce and lived most of his early life in Milton. He attended St. Agatha's School, graduated from Archbishop Williams High School, Boston College in 1965, Boston College Law School in 1968. He then earned a Master of Laws in Taxation from Boston University in 1975. Jack's legal career spanned four decades and was marked by excellence, commitment and integrity. From 1969 to his retirement in 2008 as Vice President and Counsel, Jack was a respected and valued member of the legal departments of State Mutual Assurance Company of Worcester which became Allmerica Financial and is now known as The Hanover Insurance Co. Jack brought his singular abilities and intelligence to bear on everything that was required of him during his distinguished and productive career. Jack believed in "giving back" to his community and demonstrated this commitment in several meaningful ways. While still a law school student, he served in the Voter Registration Movement in Meridian MS. He later served as a member of the Boards of The Family Health Center and Girls Inc., both in Worcester. He was a member, past president and frequent contributor to The Torch Club of Worcester. He was also a devoted parishioner of St. Mary's Church in North Grafton serving on its Finance Committee. Jack also served his country as a Captain with The MA Army National Guard. He had hoped during his retirement to work for Habitat for Humanity which unfortunately was not to be due to his illness. Jack was a man of many interests as a serious stamp collector specializing in American stamps, searching for antiques, particularly clocks, oil lamps and chairs which he was able to expertly recane. He planted a wonderful garden each spring, followed many sports, especially Boston College and Boston professional teams. Jack also traveled with his wife Eileen to many destinations including Alaska, Bermuda, National Parks, the US west coast and Europe. His family wishes to thank the staff of U Mass Memorial Hospice especially Suzanne Dwinell R.N. and Betty Wilbur for their wonderful care of Jack during his illness. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that you honor and remember Jack with donations to Cure PSP, 30 E. Padonia Road, Suite 201, Timonium MD 21093, Habitat for Humanity Metro West Greater Worcester Inc., 111 Park Ave. Worcester MA 01609, or to St. Vincent DePaul Society c/o St. Mary's Church 17 Waterville St. North Grafton MA 01536.
