LaFontaine, John J. Sr., 85, passed away Friday, August 28, 2009. He was the husband of the late Ruth E. (Mulligan) LaFontaine. Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Edward and Zilda (Havey) LaFontaine, he resided in Warwick for most of his life. Mr. LaFontaine was a self-employed shellfisherman and had operated Mulligan’s Creek, a family-owned marina for many years. He was formerly employed at the Narragansett Brewery until 1980. He was a WWII Army veteran serving in the Pacific Theater, and was a member of the VFW and the American Legion Wilcox Post in Warwick. He is survived by his son James A. LaFontaine and his wife Mary, and granddaughters Katelyn, Samantha and Molly. He was the father of the late John “Johny Joe” LaFontaine. He was the brother of Ernest and Philip LaFontaine, Edna Spelman, Claire Spatcher, the late Edward and William LaFontaine and Doris Payne. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:30 AM from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in St. Rita Church, Oakland Beach Ave. Burial with military honors in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 PM.
