John J. Manning, Sr., beloved husband of Katherine (Endslow) Manning of Peabody, died peacefully Friday evening at the Peabody Glen Nursing Home following a long illness.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late John and Annie (Hart) Manning. He graduated from Peabody High School, Class of 1944, and was a lifelong resident of Peabody.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Mr. Manning worked for 35 years with Eastman Gelatin as a Supervisor in the Shipping and Receiving function for the company, retiring in 1985.

John was a member of the A.O.H., Division 11 of Peabody, the Knights of Columbus, Leo Council 508 of Peabody, and a longtime communicant and volunteer with St. John the Baptist Church in Peabody where he gathered often as a “7 O’Clocker” at the daily Mass when in good health. He will also be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

He is survived by: his wife, Katherine (Endslow) Manning of Peabody; two sons and daughters-in-law, John J. & Gina Manning, Jr., of Lynn and Mark & Karen Manning of Berlin, MA; a daughter Maureen Dolen & her late husband Robert of Strafford, NH; nine grandchildren, Kelly, Stephanie, Patrick, & Matthew Manning of Lynn, Ryan & Robert Dolen of NH, and Nicole, Stephen, & Brian Manning of Berlin, MA; a sister, Dorothy Ford of Wenham, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Conway.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM in St. John’s Church, Peabody. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
